Prime Minister announces appointment of two Chief Justices

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that Her Excellency the Governor General has approved his recommendation that the Honourable Jacqueline R. Matheson be appointed Chief Justice of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island and that the Honourable Edmond P. Blanchard be appointed Chief Justice of the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada.

Chief Justice Matheson has served since 1988 as judge of the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island. She graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1977 and was admitted to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1978 and the Bar of Prince Edward Island in 1979. She practised law as a partner with the firm of Matheson and Matheson and then as Legal Adviser to the Veterans Allowance Board and to the Veterans Appeals Board.

Chief Justice Blanchard is a judge of the Federal Court and the Court Martial Appeal Court of Canada since 2000. In 2002, he was also appointed as a judicial member of the Competition Tribunal. He graduated in law from Dalhousie University in 1978 and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in 1979. Prior to being appointed to the bench, he was a Minister in the New Brunswick government and held several portfolios, including Justice and Attorney General. He first practised law as a partner with the firm of Tingley, Humphrey and Blanchard.

These appointments are effective immediately.
