Prime Minister Marks National Aboriginal Day

June 21, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

"National Aboriginal Day is a time for all Canadians to recognize the unique history, cultural diversity and remarkable contributions that First Nations, the Metis nation and Inuit continue to make to our country."

"I am especially honoured to mark National Aboriginal Day, in light of the important progress that the Government of Canada and Aboriginal Leaders have made over the past year."

"The Government and leaders of the National Aboriginal Organizations have signed new bilateral accords based on principles of trust, partnership, respect and dignity."

"Aboriginal leaders and members of the Cabinet are working intensively on how we can, together, improve the quality of life and to expand opportunities for all Aboriginal peoples - particularly in areas such as housing, education and lifelong learning, health, clean water and governance."

"Today, on this National Aboriginal Day, let us all re-commit ourselves to continuing this strong and positive momentum in our relationship."

In cooperation with the national Aboriginal organizations, the Government of Canada set aside June 21, the day of the summer solstice, as the day to celebrate the accomplishments of Aboriginal peoples and their contribution to the building of our country.

The designation of National Aboriginal Day also supports global initiatives to commemorate the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Peoples.

Ceremonies and events will take place across the country today to honour Canada's Aboriginal Peoples.
