Government announces extension of Information Commissioner’s appointment

June 30, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced a three-month extension to the term of Information Commissioner, Mr. John Reid. The Prime Minister also announced an arm’s length review to examine the merits of combining the responsibilities of the Information Commissioner and the Privacy Commissioner into a single office as has been done in numerous provincial jurisdictions.

“John Reid has been a strong advocate for improving Canadians’ access to information and for enhancing the transparency of government,” said Prime Minister Martin. “I very much appreciate that he has agreed to stay on while the government completes its review.”

Mr. Reid’s seven-year term ends on June 30, 2005.

The arm’s-length review will be conducted by an eminent person, whose mandate will be to assess the successes and challenges of the current model, review models used in other jurisdictions, and develop options for the Government’s consideration.

The reviewer will be appointed in the month of July and will be asked to submit a report to the Minister of Justice in September 2005.
