Prime Minister Martin announces the appointment of his personal representative for La Francophonie

NEWS RELEASE


Prime Minister Paul Martin is pleased to announce the appointment of Robert Collette, Canada's Chief of Protocol, as his personal representative for La Francophonie.

Mr. Collette will work in close cooperation with La Francophonie Affairs Division of Foreign Affairs Canada in order to prepare for and follow up on summits and ministerial conferences related to La Francophonie. He will also sit on the Permanent Council of la Francophonie [Conseil permanent de la Francophonie], which facilitates, coordinates and arbitrates the political, economic and cooperative aspects of activities undertaken by La Francophonie's institutions.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Robert Collette (BA [Industrial Relations] Université de Laval, 1972) joined the Public Service in 1972 as a staffing officer with the Public Service Commission. He joined the Canadian International Development Agency in 1974 and served abroad in Kuala Lumpur and Yaoundé. He joined the Trade Commissioner Service of the Department of External Affairs and International Trade in 1986 and has since served twice in Beijing and as Canada's Ambassador to the Philippines. In Ottawa, Mr. Collette has been Head of Trade, Africa Program; Deputy Director, Western Europe Trade; Director, Africa and Middle East Trade and Investment; and Director, Investment and Science and Technology for Canada. He is currently Chief of Protocol for Canada. Mr. Collette is married to Marilyn and they have two children, Mathieu and Vanessa. He succeeds Jacques Bilodeau.
