Prime Minister of Iceland to visit Canada

July 27, 2005

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin announced today that the Prime Minister of Iceland, Halldór Ásgrímsson, will be in Canada for a working visit on July 28 and 29, 2005.

“Canada and Iceland enjoy a long-standing friendship and strong people-to-people ties,” said Prime Minister Martin. “We have an excellent relationship, which is flourishing on many fronts, including commercial relations, a strong commitment to the North, and the importance we place on our youth and culture. I look forward to discussing how we can further our partnership.”

On July 29, Prime Minister Ásgrímsson will meet with Prime Minister Martin in Winnipeg to discuss a range of issues, including climate change and fisheries. The two leaders will also consider ways to enhance cooperation in international organizations such as the United Nations and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Prime Minister Ásgrímsson will also visit Gimli, Manitoba, to participate in the annual Gimli Icelandic Festival, which celebrates Icelandic culture and heritage and the arrival of the first Icelandic settlers in Canada.
