Government of Canada appoints first President of the Climate Fund Agency

November 10, 2005

NEWS RELEASE

As part of the Government‘s pledge to meet Canada’s international obligations under the Kyoto Protocol, Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced the appointment of Allan F. Amey as the country’s first-ever President of the Canada Emission Reduction Incentives Agency.

”I'm very pleased that such an experienced and well-qualified person has agreed to head the Agency," said the Prime Minister. "Mr. Amey recognizes the potential economic opportunities in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and I’m confident his leadership will help Canada honour our Kyoto commitments.”

Allan F. Amey, from Calgary, Alberta, has led the establishment of Climate Change Central, a private-public partnership set up by the Government of Alberta in partnership with industry, institutions, the environmental community, municipalities, and individual Albertans to reduce or off-set greenhouse gas emissions. He has been its President and Chief Executive Officer since 2000. He is also former Vice-President, Technology Assessment with TransCanada Corporation. Mr. Amey obtained a Bachelor in Electrical Engineering from McGill University in 1971 and a Masters in the Management of Technology from the Sloan School of Business Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994.

Announced in Budget 2005, newly-established Climate Fund Agency is a market-based institution for the purchase of emission reductions and removals on behalf of the Government of Canada. It will: purchase domestic greenhouse gas reductions from farmers, businesses, communities, Canadians, and other innovators; and secure qualifying international emissions reductions that will assist Canada in complying with its Kyoto target.

Mr. Amey will be appointed as President Designate on November 14, 2005 and will assume the role of President as of January 1, 2006.
