Canada and the European Union to hold video conference summit

November 23, 2005

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that he will be holding a video conference with European Union leaders on the morning of November 24, 2005.

"I look forward to these consultations with my EU counterparts. Canada and the EU are strategic partners; we share fundamental values and are natural allies," said the Prime Minister. "Together we can make a difference in addressing global challenges, managing regional crises and promoting a liberalized global trading regime."

Discussions will focus on how Canada and the European Union can work together as strategic partners in tackling key regional and global challenges such as the situation in Sudan, the Middle East peace process, nuclear proliferation and human rights in Iran, and cooperation in Haiti and Afghanistan. Discussions will also address climate change, the achievement of a successful outcome at the upcoming Hong Kong WTO Ministerial meeting, enhanced Canada-EU trade and investment relations, UN reform and preparation for a possible pandemic such as avian flu.

The European Union delegation will consist of President of the European Council and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Tony Blair, President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.
