The death of a Canadian Soldier in Kabul, Afghanistan

January 27, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

Prime Minister Paul Martin issued the following statement on the news that Corporal Jamie Brendan Murphy, serving with the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Canadian Regiment Battalion Group in Afghanistan, was tragically killed and three others were wounded earlier today:

“I was deeply saddened to learn this morning that the life of a young, brave Canadian soldier has been taken and that three others have been wounded in a cowardly act of terrorism in Afghanistan. While I can hardly imagine the grief that is overcoming the loved ones, friends and colleagues of Corporal Murphy on this day, I hope that they may be somehow comforted by the sincere condolences, prayers and thoughts of all Canadians across the country.

I join all Canadians in also wishing Lieutenant Jason Matthew Feyko, Corporal Jeremy Gerald MacDonald and Corporal Richard Michael Newman, the three Canadian soldiers who were injured, a speedy and complete recovery.

This incident is a painful reminder that defending our values and doing our duty in the international campaign against terrorism can exact a very high price. All Canadians owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women of the Canadian Forces who willingly and bravely venture forth on our behalf. We will not forget the sacrifices these soldiers have made to make Canada and the world a safer place.”
