The passing of Claude Ryan

February 09, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

Prime Minister Paul Martin today expressed his condolences on behalf of all Canadians following the passing of Claude Ryan:

“It is with a great deal of sadness that I have learned of the passing of Claude Ryan.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Claude Ryan embodied the core values that define our country today: respect for opinions, a commitment toward those less fortunate, and the search for compromise.

His intellectual rigour and natural curiosity made him one of the leading public figures of his time. Mr. Ryan’s editorials – thought-provoking, impeccably written and direct – gave an entire generation of Quebeckers the chance to reflect on the great issues facing our society. Recognized for his analytical skills and his ability to see the big picture, he was also a man of compassion.

A committed Canadian with an unshakeable faith in his country, he was always at the centre of the great debates on Quebec’s evolution within the Canadian federation. His contribution to this dialogue earned him the appreciation of all Quebeckers and of their fellow citizens across the country.

During the many years I was fortunate enough to know him, he impressed me by the depth of his convictions, by the wisdom he brought to both public and private discussions, and by his unwavering commitment to improving Canadian society.

Sheila and I join with many other Canadians in offering our sincerest condolences to the family of a great Quebecker, a great Canadian.”
