Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Gerald Bouey

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
Prime Minister Paul Martin today expressed his condolences on behalf of all Canadians following the passing of Gerald Bouey:
“Today, Canadians mourn the death of Gerald Bouey, former Governor of the Bank of Canada.
Mr. Bouey was a truly distinguished servant of Canada, not only as an economist but as a member of our military. After serving as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War, he began his public service career in the research department of the Bank of Canada. He would stay at the Bank for the next four decades, including 14 years as Governor. Possessed of great integrity and intellect, Mr. Bouey dedicated his professional life to the public good. He was never one to shy away from a challenge.
Indeed, the challenges were many during Mr. Bouey’s terms as Governor. But his efforts to stabilize the Canadian economy and combat inflation helped put in place the conditions required to bring about the current era of economic prosperity. In 1987, his final year as Governor, Mr. Bouey was named to the Order of Canada in recognition of a most notable career.
Sheila and I extend our deepest sympathies to Gerald’s wife, Anne, and his two children, Kathryn and Robert.”
