Statement by the Prime Minister on the occasion of Canada Day

July 01, 2004
Ottawa, Ontario

“Today we celebrate Canada’s 137th birthday. This country we celebrate, this country we strive to further build, is a tribute to the dreams and aspirations shared by those who have lived here for centuries.

Canadians from coast to coast come together to mark July 1st. This day allows us to ponder the road we have traveled, to recall our greatest successes and, more importantly, to look to the future. This future is built on the confidence we derive in having made Canada a truly open, welcoming and free country. This determination, the legacy of those who preceded us, makes of our country a symbol for justice, progress and inclusion.

This Canada we are so proud of is a land built by individuals of all origins, of all religions and of all regions. To all these peoples, united in their desire to make Canada an even better country, Happy Canada Day!”
