Statement by Prime Minister Paul Martin in recognition of tomorrow’s 15th sad anniversary of the murder of 14 young women at l'École polytechnique de Montréal

December 05, 2004

“December 6, 1989 is a day etched in Canada's history, On that day, fourteen young women were murdered at l'École polytechnique de Montréal - targeted simply because they were women.

Since then, Canadians have commemorated December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

This tragedy had a profound impact on our nation. It touched us all. We were reminded that if we are to build a just society, we must work to end violence against women.

As we observe a moment of silence and reflect on that terrible day 15 years ago, we think of the families of those 14 young Canadians. Together, let us honour the women lost that day by reaffirming our commitment to end violence against women.”
