Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Senator Philippe Deane Gigantès

December 10, 2004

“Thoughout Senator Philippe Deane Gigantès’ extraordinary life, there was one overriding passion – his commitment to freedom and democracy.

He fought for freedom during the Second World War. As a journalist, he covered the Korean War and witnessed the battle for freedom there. As an author and historian, he wrote about the forces that drive history and on democratic society’s need for order.

As a Member of Parliament, he was for 14 years an active Member of the Senate for De Lorimier, Québec, serving on many Senate committees until he retired in 1998.

Philippe Deane Gigantès will be greatly missed by Parliamentarians, by readers of his countless books and articles, by those who admire a man who spent a lifetime in the service of freedom and democracy. He led by example – guided, as always, by an unswerving commitment to these noble ideals. He will be remembered as a Canadian who served his country with dedication, engagement and distinction.”
