Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Alberta Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole

January 07, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today expressed his condolences on the passing of Alberta Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole.

“Lois Hole`s life was profoundly dedicated to her community, province and nation. Throughout her life she demonstrated tireless support for education and the public health system.

“It was a commitment reflected in her years as trustee and chair of several Alberta school districts, on the Governing Council of the Athabasca University, and as Chancellor of the University of Alberta. She also contributed to libraries and the arts in Alberta, notably through the Lois Hole Library Legacy Program, the Alberta School Boards Association "Lois Hole Lecture Series", the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Program, and a new library in Edmonton named for her. Her support for a robust public health care system was recognized in 2004 when the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton named their major new expansion the Lois Hole Women's Hospital.

“Lois Hole committed her life to the betterment of her fellow citizens. She brought energy, spirit and good humour to everything she did. Albertans and Canadians will miss this most compassionate and dedicated public servant.”
