Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of former British Prime Minister James Callaghan

March 26, 2005

Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement upon receiving news of the death of former British Prime Minister James Callaghan:

“It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former Prime Minister Callaghan earlier today.

“Prime Minister Callaghan was a dynamic force in British politics, where he served the British people and Labour Party with distinction and boundless energy. With a sharp intellect, he rose through Parliament to hold senior positions in a variety of Labour governments. As a testimony to his political instincts and abilities, prior to becoming Prime Minister, he held Britain’s three most senior Cabinet positions: Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary and Foreign Secretary.

“Mr. Callaghan’s political tenure was characterized by tough decisions and a great deal of political courage.

“Canada remembers Mr. Callaghan fondly for his strong stance on having Canada included in the G7 group of countries. Canada has also honoured Mr. Callaghan’s lifelong commitment to conservation, naming a trail in Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador, after him.

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Mr. Callaghan’s son and daughters and remaining family.”
