KANANASKIS TO HOST 2002 SUMMIT OF THE G8

July 22, 2001
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the 2002 Summit of the G8 will be held June 26-28, 2002 in Kananaskis, Alberta.

"I will be honoured to welcome, on behalf of all Canadians, my colleagues of the G8 in the beautiful mountain location of Kananaskis, Alberta, for our next annual meeting," said the Prime Minister. "With the 2002 Summit, we intend to return to the original concept of an informal retreat where the participants can focus completely on the major challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the global economy. The G8 leaders will also have the opportunity to further the progress made during the 2001 Summit on issues such as poverty reduction in the developing world, the environment and democratic governance."

The Prime Minister made this announcement at the conclusion of the 2001 Summit of the G8, which was held in Genoa, Italy, July 20-22. The G8 is an informal group of eight developed democracies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
