Holiday Message from the Prime Minister

December 21, 1999
Ottawa, Ontario

The following is the text of a holiday message to all Canadians from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien:

Canada, and the world, are at the dawn of a new millennium and a new century. In this century of triumph and tragedy, we in Canada have taken the counsel of hope, of the best in the human spirit and imagination.

In a century rife with tyranny, war and repression, we have been an abiding voice for freedom, justice and peace. Time and again, Canadians have freely put their lives on the line to give expression to these fundamental values

In a century of division and inequality, we have challenged ourselves to create, in this vast and diverse land, a sense of family. A sense that we all belong. That, no matter where we live, the language we speak, or where we come from, we are brothers and sisters; who dream together, achieve together, rejoice together in good times, and reach out to each other in bad times.

Our success in this century is, first and foremost, a tribute to the Canadian people. The story of this great country is their story. Our success is their success. The generous and humane values we project in world are their values. It is they who have the right to feel the deepest pride in our national achievements. And it is because of Canadians' basic decency and goodwill that we can look forward to the new century with such optimism and confidence.

Aline joins me in wishing all Canadians - wherever they may be - a happy, safe and healthy Holiday Season. May the New Year, and the new century to come, smile upon all of us.
