Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that Fisheries Minister Geoff Regan will act as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada in all matters relating to Mr. Maher Arar.

This follows the decision by Justice Minister and Attorney General of Canada, Irwin Cotler, not to participate in any government discussions or decisions concerning Mr. Arar.

Minister Regan will rely on the support of the Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General in the exercise of these responsibilities.
