Prime Minister Paul Martin today appointed the Honourable John Harvard Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.

“I know John Harvard will serve the people of Manitoba as diligently as he served the people of Charleswood St. James-Assiniboia for 16 years,” said the Prime Minister. “John has consistently been a strong advocate on issues that are important to Manitobans and all western Canadians.”

Mr. Harvard was first elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Charleswood St. James-Assiniboia in 1988 and served for four consecutive terms. He was Chair of the Northern and Western Caucus and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade with special emphasis on Resource Promotion until May 2004.

Mr. Harvard was appointed Chair of the Prime Minister’s Caucus Task Force on the Four Western Provinces in January 1999. In March 2001, Mr. Harvard was also appointed to the Prime Minister’s Caucus Task Force on Future Opportunities in Farming.

He has served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food as well as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services. He has served as Chairman of the Manitoba Liberal Caucus and was a member of numerous House of Commons Committees including Canadian Heritage and Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

Prior to entering politics, Mr Harvard was an award-winning broadcaster and journalist. During his 30-year career Mr. Harvard worked in both radio and television and spent the last 18 years of his journalism career with the CBC.

“I would also thank Lieutenant Governor Peter Liba, who executed his role with integrity and distinction,” said the Prime Minister.
