NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today released the summary report Strengthening the Relationship, Report on the Canada-Aboriginal Peoples Roundtable. The document captures the proceedings of the Canada-Aboriginal Peoples Roundtable held in Ottawa on April 19th this year.

“The Roundtable held last month represented an unprecedented opportunity for over 40 members of the Federal Cabinet, Senate and House of Commons to engage 70 Aboriginal leaders from across the country,” said Prime Minister Martin. “The production and distribution of this report is an important step as we continue to forge a new relationship with the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada.”

Following the April 19th Roundtable, the Prime Minister set out four key next steps including the release of the summary report that will serve as a blueprint for action. Additionally, it was agreed that members of the Cabinet Committee on Aboriginal Affairs would meet with Aboriginal leaders and discuss work on the key quality of life priorities identified during the day. Federal Ministers will be conducting a series of follow-up policy roundtable sessions in partnership with Aboriginal leaders and in cooperation with provincial and territorial governments. Finally, the federal government has committed to the production of an Aboriginal report card to ensure focussed effort and quantifiable results.
