Prime Minister announces appointment of Chief Justice of Superior Court of Quebec

NEWS RELEASE

Prime Minister Paul Martin today announced that Her Excellency the Governor General has approved his recommendation that the Honourable François Rolland be appointed Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Quebec.

Chief Justice Rolland received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Montreal in 1974 and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1975. He was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Quebec in 1996. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he had been a senior partner at the firm of Martineau, Walker, where he practised primarily in the areas of commercial litigation and insurance law.

The Honourable François Rolland is a member of the board of governors of the National Judicial Institute, and responsible for its international cooperation group. He is a member of the board of directors and executive committee of the Quebec Superior Court Judges’ Conference, and a member of council of the Canadian Association of Superior Court Judges. He is a founding member and former Chair of the Forum of Canadian Judges of the Canadian Bar Association.

The appointment comes into effect October 1, 2004.
