Canada-Ontario Agreements

May 07, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

BACKGROUNDER

The Governments of Canada and Ontario reached agreement in a number of areas of shared priority. Between now and 2009-10, these actions will see federal financial support to Ontario increase by a five year total of $5.75 billion. Specifically, the two governments have agreed on the following:

– A new Immigration Agreement will see the Government of Canada invest additional resources for settlement services and enhanced language training in Ontario, recognizing both Ontario’s high share of immigrant arrivals and addressing its low share of current immigration funding.

– A new Labour Market Development Agreement will be concluded within 30 days, including a rise in funding for the training of unemployed persons in Ontario to the national average.

– Building on the amendments to the 2005 Budget, measures will be taken by the Government of Canada to assist post-secondary students and the institutions they attend. This will have national application.

– An agreement to create a single administration of corporate income tax in Ontario at the federal level will be concluded imminently and cooperation in meat inspection services will be pursued.

– The Government of Canada has announced a comprehensive climate change plan which includes a number of funding mechanisms. Ontario will be a significant contributor to achieving Canada’s climate change targets. Both governments agree to work together to identify priority investments under the plan.
