STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER

Prime Minister Paul Martin today welcomed news of the release of Malaysia’s former Deputy Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim following his successful appeal against criminal charges:

“I am very pleased to learn of Anwar’s release today. I have followed his plight closely over the past six years from the time that we served our countries as finance ministers and became good friends.

We have consistently urged the Malaysian government to uphold the principle of judicial independence and are pleased that the rule of law has prevailed in the end.

Today’s ruling is also a credit to Wan Azizah, Anwar’s wife, whose single-minded advocacy of her husband’s innocence has served as a shining example of strength and commitment. Having spoken frequently over the years, I know that today’s ruling is a testament to her perseverance.

I wish Anwar a speedy return to health following much needed medical attention and great happiness as he reunites with his family.”
