Message from Mel Cappe
November 10, 1999
TO ALL PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYEES:
Earlier this year, you and your colleagues had the opportunity to participate in the
first-ever Public Service-wide employee survey. Statistics Canada received more than
104,000 responses, and I am pleased that the results are now available.
Like you, I'm seeing the results today for the first time. I expect there will be areas
where we will have to increase our efforts and others where we can take pride. This will
be the baseline from which to measure our progress in the years ahead. The survey is the
latest in a series of La Relève initiatives that are helping us to renew the Public
Service.
The results you are seeing today are the big picture for the Public Service. Data
specific to your department or agency will be made available on November 18. In the days
and weeks that follow, you will be invited to sit down and discuss the results, and to
work together on an action plan to address issues of concern. I encourage you to take an
active part in this process.
I am committed, as are all Deputy Ministers and Agency Heads, to dealing with the
results in a practical way and not just studying them. Taking concrete action to improve
the workplace is one of the ways we will make the Public Service of Canada an employer of
choice. Working together, we can achieve real, positive change.
