The Head of the Public
Service Award
DATE: April 17, 2000
TO: All public servants
FROM: Mel Cappe, Clerk
of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet
SUBJECT: The Head of the Public Service Award
Dear Colleague:
It is time again to launch the Head of the Public Service Award. I am writing to you
today to encourage you to nominate your colleagues, supervisors, or employees across the
country and overseas.
As an enthusiastic supporter of the commitment and dedication of public servants, I
urge each of you to take some time to recognize the good work of others.
This award is open to public servants at every level - from administrative support
staff to executives. It recognizes up to 20 federal public servants as individuals or
teams.
As in past years, there are three main categories - service, policy and people. These
categories mirror the priorities in my recent Annual Report to the Prime Minister on the
Public Service. Modernizing service delivery, strengthening our policy capacity and
focusing on our people are the three pillars that we must focus on to serve Canadians
well, now and in the future.
I also want to emphasize the importance of values and ethics as the foundation of
public service. This year, for the first time, I am launching a new category to the Head
of the Public Service Award to pay tribute to a fine public servant. The John Tait
Memorial Head of the Public Service Award for Values and Ethics will honour an
individual or team who exemplifies the very highest standard of public service values.
A nomination form and a further explanation
of the categories and eligibility criteria are attached. The nominations are due by June 30, 2000.
The Head of the Public Service Award is an opportunity to build on the overwhelming
commitment to public service that employees demonstrated in their response last year to
the employee survey. Together, we can celebrate leaders at all levels whose ongoing
contribution makes the Public Service of Canada the best it can be.
Thank you.
