MINISTER STÉPHANE DION RECTIFIES AN
INACCURATE STATEMENT BY DEPUTY PREMIER
OF QUEBEC, BERNARD LANDRY

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, August 29, 1997 – During a media scrum on August 27, 1997, Mr. Bernard Landry, Deputy Premier of Quebec, described Minister Dion’s statement that no state created by secession has been admitted to the United Nations without the approval of the predecessor state as a "fundamental historical error". Minister Dion responded that it is Mr. Landry who is making a further mistake. Using Mr. Landry’s own example of Slovenia, the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs showed how difficult it is to obtain international recognition.

Minister Dion’s letter is attached.
