MINISTER DION HIGHLIGHTS THE CREATION OF THE
FEDERALISM AND FEDERATIONS PROGRAM
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, December 22,
1998 – The Honourable Stéphane Dion, President of the Privy Council and
Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, highlighted the launch of the Federalism
and Federations grant program. This initiative, which is co-sponsored by the
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, is designed to stimulate
research, training and dissemination of knowledge in the field of federalism
studies.
"This new program addresses an
important need. It will yield leading-edge findings and support the work of
researchers, students and institutions interested in the study of federalism and
federations. Among other things, the program will encourage comparative research
with other countries that have adopted this system of government,"
Mr. Dion noted.
The Intergovernmental Affairs
Division of the Privy Council Office and the Social Sciences and Humanities
Research Council (SSHRC) will provide $1.77 million in funding over four years
for the program, which will be administered by SSHRC. According to Minister Dion,
contemporary political evolution clearly highlights the relevance of such an
initiative.
"At a time when federalism is
often cited as an example of vitality and flexibility, we can take great
pleasure in this initiative, which will help us to rise more effectively to the
challenges facing federations today. As Canadians, we can draw on the
experiences of other federations and enable them to benefit from ours,"
Minister Dion concluded.
