MINISTER DION ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF
MR. CAMILLE H. THÉRIAULT AS CHAIRPERSON OF THE CANADIAN
TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION AND SAFETY BOARD
OTTAWA, ONTARIO, July 17, 2002 – The
Honourable Stéphane Dion, President of the Privy Council and Minister
of Intergovernmental Affairs, today announced the appointment of the Honourable
Camille H. Thériault as Chairperson of the Canadian Transportation
Accident Investigation and Safety Board. Mr. Thériault had been appointed
as a member of the Board in December 2001.
The Honourable Camille H. Thériault has extensive experience in public
management. He was Premier of New Brunswick from 1998 to 1999, and had
previously served as the province's Minister of Economic Development and Tourism
(1995-1998), Minister of Advanced Education (1994-1995) and Minister of
Fisheries and Aquaculture (1991-1994).
This vast experience in public administration is complemented by a good
knowledge of private enterprise. Mr. Thériault has served on the Kent
Industrial Commission as Executive Director of Small-business Liaisons and with
the United Fishermen of the Maritimes as Vice-president in a liaison capacity
with member cooperatives. Mr. Thériault holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Social Sciences from the Université de Moncton.
Mr. Dion also highlighted the excellent work undertaken by
Charles H. Simpson who acted as interim Chairperson since September 2,
2001.
The Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board is an
independent agency which reports to Parliament through the President of the
Privy Council. Its role is to advance transportation safety through
investigations in the fields of marine, pipeline, rail and aviation
transportation.
