Prime Minister Opens
Office of the Summit of the
Americas in Quebec City
February 18, 2000
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien officially opened today the Office of the Summit of the Americas in Quebec City. The Summit will be held from
April 20 to 22, 2001.
"Canada is proud to be the host of this major international event in Quebec City," said the
Prime Minister. "The Quebec Summit will constitute an important step in the progression of
the Americas towards greater integration, and illustrate the central role Canada plays in our
hemisphere."
The Summit of the Americas will be the culmination of a two-year period in which Canada has hosted the Americas on numerous occasions. In the summer of 1999, Canada hosted the Pan
American Games in Winnipeg, followed, last September, by the Conference of Spouses of
Heads of State and Government of the Americas in Ottawa, and the Americas Business Forum
and the FTAA Trade Ministerial, in Toronto, in November. This spring, from June 4-6, Canada will host the
30th Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States in
Windsor.
