Appointments to the Senate

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that Her Excellency the
Governor General has agreed to summon Raymond Squires of Newfoundland and
Labrador and Jane Cordy of Nova Scotia to the Senate.
The appointment of Ms. Cordy brings to 24 the number of women that the Prime
Minister has named to the Senate since 1993 - the most to be appointed by any
Prime Minister in Canadian history. The number of women in the Senate has risen
from 16 at the time the government took office to 33 as of this appointment.
The appointments are effective immediately.

Jane Marie Cordy
An accomplished educator, Jane Cordy also has an extensive record of
community involvement.
Ms. Cordy earned a Teaching Certificate from the Nova Scotia Teachers’s
College and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University.
In 1970, she began her teaching career, which has included stints with the
Sydney School Board, the Halifax County School Board, the New Glasgow School
Board, and the Halifax Regional School Board.
Ms. Cordy has also served as Vice-Chair of the Halifax-Dartmouth Port
Development Commission and as Chair of the Board of Referees for the Halifax
Region of Human Resources Development Canada.
Ms. Cordy has also given generously of her time to numerous voluntary
organizations. She has been a Board Member of Phoenix House, a shelter for
homeless youth; a Member of the Judging Committee for the Dartmouth Book Awards
(1993-95 --1999-2000); Member of the Strategic Planning Committee of Colby
Village Elementary School; and, a Religious Education Program Volunteer and
Lector with Dartmouth’s St. Clement’s Church.
Ms. Cordy is a native of Sydney, Nova Scotia, and is 49 years of age.
Raymond G. Squires, C.M.
A respected civic leader and successful entrepreneur, Raymond Squires’
record of devoted community service has earned him recognition as a Member of
the Order of Canada.
Mr. Squires served for 20 years with St. Anthony Town Council - 12 as a
Councillor and eight as Mayor. He played a key role in the growth and
modernization of St. Anthony - including the installation of running water, a
sewer system, electricity and paved streets.
Mr. Squires’ exemplary record of voluntary service includes: two years as
President of the St. Anthony Chamber of Commerce; two years as President of the
St. Anthony Lion’s Club; and, four years as Chair of the Finance Committee of
the Grenfell Regional Health Services of Northern Newfoundland and Labrador. He
has also been a keen and generous supporter of youth sports.
In 1955, Mr. Squires started Squires Garage Ltd., a gas and automobile
service station that he steadily expanded until his retirement in 1990. For ten
years, he also owned and operated the St. Anthony Motel.
Mr. Squires has been made a Lifetime Member of Lion’s International of
Canada and of the St. Anthony Lion’s Club.
In 1997, he was made a member of the Order of Canada in the Category of
Voluntary Service.
Mr. Squires is a native of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, and is 74 years of age.
