STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER
July 10, 2002
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was saddened to learn of the death today of
former Lieutenant-Governor of Québec Jean-Pierre Côté:
"I was saddened to learn of the death of Jean-Pierre Côté today, a
man who dedicated his life with distinction to Canada and public service.
From his first election to public life in the House of Commons in 1963,
Mr. Côté quickly demonstrated a love for his country while he served as a
Member of Parliament and cabinet minister under the Pearson and Trudeau
governments. Following his appointment to the Senate in 1972, his passion
and intellect was recognized with his appointment as Lieutenant-Governor of
Québec in 1978.
Mr. Côté will also be fondly remembered by many for his tremendous
contributions to his community and a number of worthy causes to which he
lent his time and efforts.
Aline joins me in offering, on behalf of all Canadians, our most sincere
and heartfelt condolences to Jean-Pierre’s family and many friends."
