PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES CHANGES
TO THE MINISTRY

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced changes to the Ministry, and
reaffirmed his government’s commitment to continue providing Canadians with
forward-looking policies and programs for the 21st century.
The Prime Minister expressed his deep gratitude for the long and
distinguished service and the exceptional contribution made to Canada and to the
government’s achievements at home and abroad by the Honourable Lloyd Axworthy,
who is leaving the Cabinet.
The Prime Minister also thanked the Honourable George Baker for his
efforts as Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency) and for his contribution to the government and the
country.
The Prime Minister welcomed the following new members of his Cabinet:
- The Honourable Brian Tobin as Minister of Industry;
- The Honourable Ronald J. Duhamel becomes Minister of Veterans Affairs and
retains his responsibilities as Secretary of State (Western Economic
Diversification) (Francophonie).
The Prime Minister also announced that:
- The Honourable John Manley, previously Minister of Industry, becomes
Minister of Foreign Affairs;
- The Honourable J. Bernard Boudreau, in addition to being Leader of the
Government in the Senate, becomes Minister of State (Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency).

THE HONOURABLE BRIAN TOBIN
Minister of Industry
Brian Tobin was Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador from 1996 until the
present. Mr. Tobin won two consecutive majority governments since entering
provincial politics.
Prior to that, Mr. Tobin was a Member of Parliament for Humber-St. Barbe-Baie
Verte from 1980 to 1996. In 1981, he was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to
the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and was elected Chair of the national
Liberal caucus in 1989. He served as a member of the 1993 Liberal national
campaign and national platform committees. Mr. Tobin served as Minister of
Fisheries and Oceans from November 1993 to January 1996.
Mr. Tobin, who studied at Memorial University of Newfoundland, is married to
Jodean Smith and they have three children.
