Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that he will attend the G8
Summit in Genoa, Italy, July 20-22, 2001.
"I’m looking forward to this opportunity to exchange views with my
colleagues on the world economy, the challenge of global poverty reduction, and
the environment," said the Prime Minister. "As we conduct this meeting
and prepare next year’s Summit in Canada, we must keep in mind that G8
cooperation, especially when we work in partnership with developing countries,
can bring real benefits to Canadians and to the world."
The G8 is an informal group of eight developed democracies: Canada, France,
Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
G8 membership enables Canada to pursue its broad foreign, trade, and
economic policy agenda and interests and to help shape global developments on a
range of issues, including responses to global crises.
