Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that the Prime Minister of
Lebanon, Rafik Al-Hariri will visit Ottawa from April 29th to May 1st, 2001.
Prime Minister Al-Hariri will lead a delegation of five Ministers.
"I am very concerned about the recent confrontations which have raised
tensions in the Middle East", said the Prime Minister. " Prime
Minister Hariri and I will discuss the situation, including how Canada and the
international community can play a positive role."
The two leaders will also discuss planning for the upcoming Sommet de la
Francophonie, which Lebanon will host from October 26 to 28, in Beirut. Canada
was the host country of the last Sommet de la Francophonie which took place in
Moncton, New Brunswick, in September 1999.
During his visit, Prime Minister Hariri and his delegation will hold
discussions with their Canadian counterparts on bilateral issues, including
trade and investment. Prime Minister Hariri will also meet Members of Parliament
and Canadian business leaders.
Canada and Lebanon have enjoyed excellent relations for nearly half a century.
The Lebanese-Canadian community has made a valuable contribution to the social,
economic and political life of Canada.
