PRIME MINISTER TO ATTEND THE LONDON PROGRESSIVE GOVERNANCE SUMMIT

July 8, 2003
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that he will travel to the United Kingdom to attend the London Progressive Governance Summit, being held July 11-14, 2003, at the invitation of British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"I look forward to this opportunity to exchange ideas and share Canada's experiences and perspectives to a number of domestic and international policy areas, including social welfare, public service renewal, corporate reform and global governance as well as migration and social integration," said the Prime Minister.

The London Summit will bring together some 15 heads of state and government for informal discussions on new political strategies which are often described as "progressive governance" or the "Third Way." Participants will exchange best practices and approaches and discuss current global issues with a special focus on the role of progressive governance in today's political climate.

On July 12, the Prime Minister will speak to the conference of experts that precedes the Summit on the Canadian experience and the challenges for leaders of progressive governments.
