PRIME MINISTER ANNOUNCES NEW CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND SUPREME COURT – APPEAL DIVISION

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today the appointment of the Honourable

Mr. Justice Gerard E. Mitchell of Charlottetown as Chief Justice of the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court – Appeal Division. He replaces the Honourable N.H. Carruthers who has elected to become a supernumerary judge effective January 1, 2001.

Mr. Justice Mitchell received a Bachelor of Arts from St. Dunstan’s University in 1964. In 1970, he received his Bachelor of Laws from the University of New Brunswick and was admitted to the Bar of Prince Edward Island in the same year. Mr. Justice Mitchell was appointed to the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court in 1981 and then to the Prince Edward Island Supreme Court – Appeal Division in 1987. Prior to his appointment to the superior court, Mr. Justice Mitchell served as a judge of the Provincial Court of Prince Edward Island to which he was appointed in 1975.

This appointment is effective January 1, 2001.
