November 27, 1995
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that Dr. Cheddi
Jagan, President of Guyana, will visit Ottawa June 13 to 14. Dr.
Jagan will be accompanied by Guyana's Senior Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Clement J. Rohee.
"Canada has excellent relations with Guyana and this visit
gives us the opportunity to strengthen our relationship in ways
that continue to support democratic, social and economic development
in Guyana," said the Prime Minister. "We will also be
discussing means to encourage greater trade and investment between
our nations as we prepare for an eventual Free Trade Area of the
Americas."
President Jagan will meet with Prime Minister Chrétien
on June 13. Talks between the two leaders are expected to focus
on a number of bilateral issues including increasing two-way trade
and facilitating investment, and regional issues such as hemispheric
free trade and economic development. The meeting will also serve
as a follow-up to the CARICOM Heads of Government conference held
last March in Grenada.
President Jagan will meet with Minister for International Trade
Art Eggleton on June 13 and with Minister for International Cooperation
and Minister responsible for la Francophonie Pierre Pettigrew
on June 14.
