Prime Minister's message for the holidays
December 20, 1995
Ottawa, Ontario
Following is a text of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's message
for the holidays:
"It is a pleasure to offer you greetings for the holidays.
The United Nations has ranked Canada as the best country in
the world in which to live. But we were reminded this year that
we can never take this great country for granted.
Once again this year, the unity of our country was called into
question. Canada triumphed, but it was a very wrenching experience
for Canadians.
Canada belongs to each one of us. It is the sum of all our
hopes and our individual efforts. It is up to all of us to protect
it.
During this holiday season, I invite each of you to reflect
on what you can do to ensure that Canada continues to evolve as
a peaceful, prosperous, and united country -- and how we can make
Canada an even better place to live for all Canadians.
Because a country is simply a group of people who choose to
live together.
This year we all saw an incredible outpouring of love and pride
in Canada. That is why I have such confidence in our future.
My family and I extend our best wishes to all Canadians for
an enjoyable holiday season and a happy new year."
