Brochure to inform Quebecers on referendum commitments kept
January 18, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario
The Government of Canada has published a brochure, entitled "Commitments
made. Commitments kept.", to inform Quebecers of key
initiatives undertaken following the Quebec referendum. In December,
the Government took specific, tangible measures to follow through
on commitments made during the referendum campaign by Prime Minister
Jean Chrétien, on behalf of the federalist side.
The brochure will be distributed this weekend to all households
in Quebec.
"I made a commitment to Canadians to undertake changes to
ensure the unity of the country," the Prime Minister said.
"I also assured Quebecers that Canada would evolve in accordance
with their aspirations. I gave my word and I have kept it."
These measures are a first step in the process of renewing and
modernizing Canada. Specifically, they include recognition of
Quebec as a distinct society within Canada by the House of Commons
and the Senate, a bill passed by the House of Commons granting
a constitutional veto to the five major regions of the country,
and the withdrawal of the federal government from labour-market
training.
"Quebecers have a right to be fully informed of the measures
for change undertaken by the Government of Canada following the
referendum to respond to their expectations," said Prime
Minister Chrétien.
