Prime Minister appoints Parliamentary Secretaries
February 23, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of Parliamentary Secretaries to the Cabinet. Parliamentary Secretaries
assist Ministers with their parliamentary and departmental responsibilities.
"I want to thank all the outstanding Parliamentary Secretaries
who have served this government with great distinction during
the first half of our mandate," the Prime Minister said.
"They deserve a good deal of the credit for our government's
accomplishments during the last two years."
The Prime Minister has adopted the practise of previous governments
of completely rotating Parliamentary Secretaries.* "We have
such an abundance of committed and talented MPs in the Government
Caucus that I believe it is important to give as many of them
as possible a chance to gain this valuable executive experience,"
said the Prime Minister.
A list of Parliamentary Secretaries is attached. The appointments
are effective immediately.
*The exception is Robert Nault, MP (Kenora - Rainy River). Mr.
Nault will continue to serve as a Parliamentary Secretary as he
was appointed only in September 1995 to assist the then Minister
of Labour, Lucienne Robillard.
