Hon. H.A. (Bud) Olson Appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of the Honourable H.A. (Bud) Olson as Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta.
Born on October 6, 1925 in Iddesleigh, Alberta, Mr. Olson has
served as a Member of Parliament, federal cabinet minister, and
Senator. Originally a farmer and businessman, Mr. Olson was elected
to the House of Commons as the Social Credit MP for the riding
of Medicine Hat in 1957, 1962, 1963, and 1965. He was elected
as a Liberal MP in 1968 and served as Minister of Agriculture
from 1968 to 1972. He was appointed to the Senate in 1977 and
served as Minister of State for Economic Development from 1980
to 1982. He also served as Leader of the Government in the Senate
from 1982 to 1984.
Mr. Olson and his wife live in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Mr. Olson
resigned from the Senate today. In keeping with the policy of
this government, Mr. Olson will not be collecting his parliamentary
pension while serving as Lieutenant-Governor.
