Canada to Participate in Summit on Terrorism
March 8, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced today that he and
Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy will represent Canada
at the March 13 Summit of the Peacemakers at Sharm el Sheik, Egypt.
The Summit is being held in the wake of the recent terrorist
attacks in Israel which have jeopardized the Middle East Peace
Process.
"Canada has been active in both the peace process and the
struggle against international terrorism," said Mr. Chrétien.
"We will not stand idly by and let terrorists attempt to
destroy the peace process and everything that has already been
accomplished."
About 30 countries are expected to participate in the Summit which
will be co-chaired by U.S. President Bill Clinton and Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak. Among leaders attending are Israeli
Prime Minister Shimon Peres, King Hussein of Jordan, Yasser Arafat,
Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, and Russian
President Boris Yeltsin.
Mr. Axworthy's previously scheduled trip to Washington will be
postponed until later this month.
