Ottawa, Ontario
On the occasion of the City of Calgary's formal presention today
of its bid to the Bureau international des expositions (BIE) in
Paris to host Expo 2005, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien reaffirmed
the support of the Government of Canada. Calgary's bid for the
exposition, which would run between May 1 and October 10, 2005,
is also supported by the Province of Alberta.
"Calgary, the host of the 1988 Winter Olympics, is a Canadian
city whose openness to the world matches the theme chosen for
the 2005 Exposition, The Land -- Our Common Ground,"
said the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister noted that Canada has earned an undisputed
reputation for the quality of its participation in international
expositions and has successfully hosted two expositions -- Montreal
in 1967 and Vancouver in 1986. "They left unforgettable memories
with more than 75 million visitors from around the world,"
added the Prime Minister. "They will remain memorable events
in our country's history."
Nagoya, Japan, is also seeking to host the exposition
