Visit to Canada by Central American Leaders

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced that six Central
American leaders will visit Canada from May 15 to 17.
The President of Nicaragua, Violeta Barrios Terres de Chamorro,
the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, José Maria
Figueres Olsen, the President of the Republic of El Salvador,
Armando Calderon Sol, the President of Guatemala, Alvaro Arzu
Irigoyen, the President of Honduras, Carlos Roberto Reina, and
the Prime Minister of Belize, Manuel Esquivel, will visit Ottawa
and Toronto.
In Ottawa, May 15-16, the leaders will meet with Prime Minister
Chrétien and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lloyd Axworthy.
The focus of their discussions will be economic cooperation,
sustainable development and the promotion of civil and human rights.
In Toronto, May 16-17, the leaders will meet with Art Eggleton,
Minister for International Trade, provincial government officials
and senior business leaders to promote trade and investment and
economic opportunities in Central America.
This visit is a follow-up to Prime Minister Chrétien's
visit in January 1995 to Latin America and the Caribbean. It
forms part of Canada's overall strategy toward the hemisphere,
including a commitment to democratic development and economic
growth in the region.
