Bombing of military base in Saudi Arabia
June 26, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien strongly condemned yesterday's
bombing of a military compound in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, which
houses American, British, French and Saudi military personnel
and their families. He also extended deepest sympathies to the
victims and their families.
"This was the most heinous and cowardly act of terrorism,"
said the Prime Minister. "Canada sincerely hopes that the
responsible parties will be apprehended quickly and brought to
justice."
Though early descriptions of the incident point to a deliberate
act of terrorism, no one yet has claimed responsibility. It is
reported that some 20 people were killed, approximately 240 injured,
over 100 of them seriously. The majority of casualties were American.
Though more than 1,000 Canadians reside in the area, it appears
there were no Canadian casualties.
