New members appointed to
National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of three new members to the National Round Table on the Environment
and the Economy.
The Round Table brings together eminent Canadians from all sectors
of society -- government, industry, labour, academia, and environmental
organizations -- dedicated to the the promotion of sustainable
development in Canada.
The new members are:
Jean M. Bélanger - past president, Canadian Chemical
Producers' Association;
Michael Harcourt - former premier of British Columbia;
Carol Phillips - Director of Education and International
Affairs, Canadian Automobile Workers; former advisor to Ontario
Premier Bob Rae; former executive vice-president, Canadian Labour
Congress.
The Round Table formally reports to the Prime Minister and, as
such, is in a key position to influence ongoing efforts to meet
the goals of sustainable development.
Environment Minister Sergio Marchi will continue to lead the government's
regular interface with the Round Table. Federal and provincial
ministers are encouraged to attend Round Table meetings and participate
actively in its deliberations.
