Statement by the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today released this statement
on the death of Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping:
"On behalf of the government of Canada and all Canadians, I extend my condolences to
the family of Deng Xiaoping, the Government of China and to the
Chinese people. Deng Xiaoping will be remembered as one of the
pivotal figures of Chinese history, who did much to modernize
his country. We are confident that in the future China will continue
to follow the path of reform and openness embarked upon by Deng."
