Marilyn Trenholme Counsell Appointed as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment
of Dr. Marilyn Trenholme Counsell as Lieutenant-Governor of New
Brunswick.
Dr. Trenholme Counsell resigned from the Legislative Assembly
and the Cabinet of New Brunswick today.

Marilyn Trenholme Counsell
Marilyn Trenholme Counsell, a medical doctor and cabinet minister,
is a well-known public figure in New Brunswick. She was born in
Baie Verte, New Brunswick, on October 22, 1933.
After studying science at Mount Allison University, she obtained
her medical degree from the University of Toronto. She also studied
at the University of New Brunswick and Cornell University. Dr.
Trenholme Counsell worked as a consultant nutritionist with the
New Brunswick and Ontario departments of health, and as a family
physician in Toronto and in Sackville. She was first elected to
the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1987. From 1994 to
1995 she was Minister of State for the Family. Since 1995, she
has served as Minister of State for Family and Community Services.
A widow, Marilyn Trenholme Counsell has two children. She lives
in Sackville, New Brunswick.
