Prime Minister Announces the Appointment of a New Coordinator of Status of Women

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Florence Ievers as Coordinator of Status of Women Canada, the federal government agency which promotes the equality of women.
Ms. Ievers has had a diverse career at the federal and provincial levels as well as in the private sector. Her previous experience includes working as a lawyer in Quebec City; briefly as Secretary and Legal Counsel with the Advisory Council on the Status of Women; Associate Chief of Staff to the Minister of International Relations and Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs, Government of Quebec; and Assistant Secretary, Intergovernmental Affairs in the Privy Council Office of Canada. She currently serves as Executive Assistant to the President of the Treasury Board. For a number of years, Ms. Ievers served as a part-time member of the Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, as well as a member of its Executive. She has served on the boards of a number of cultural and community organizations, including the Somerset West Community Health Centre and Laval University.
Her appointment is effective August 25, 1997.

FLORENCE IEVERS
Born in October 1944, Ms. Ievers graduated from Laval University with a licence en droit in 1975. She was called to the Bar of Quebec in 1976.
Ms. Ievers began her career with the Government of Quebec in the departments of Health, Revenue, the Centennial Service Division, and was also responsible for a Student Exchange Program. Between the years 1969 and 1976, Ms. Ievers served as Special Assistant to the Federal Minister of Communications and then as a part-time Researcher in the Office of the Premier of Quebec. After completing her law degree, she practised law with the firm Lacroix, Routhier, Gagnon, Beaupré and later served briefly as Secretary and Legal Counsel with the Advisory Council on the Status of Women. In 1981, she joined the Office of the Prime Minister as Secretary of Appointments and Quebec Advisor. She returned to the Government of Quebec in 1985 to assume the position of Associate Chief of Staff to the Minister of International Relations and Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs. In 1988, she joined the federal public service and has successively occupied the positions of Assistant Secretary, Liaison and Integration in the Federal-Provincial Relations Office; Assistant Secretary, Intergovernmental Affairs in the Privy Council Office and Executive Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and later the President of the Treasury Board.
