Prime Minister Announces the Appointment of a New Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien today announced the appointment of Wayne Wouters, currently Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet (Plans and Consultation) in the Privy Council Office, as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. He succeeds William A. Rowat who has been appointed Senior Advisor to the Privy Council Office.
Prior to assuming his current position in December 1994, Mr. Wouters was head of a Task Force on the Newfoundland Economy and later served as Assistant Secretary to the Cabinet (Program Review) in the Privy Council Office. He joined the federal public service in 1982, after five years in the Saskatchewan public service, and has held progressively more senior positions in the Departments of Energy, Mines and Resources, and Finance, as well as in the Privy Council Office since that time.
This appointment is effective September 2, 1997.
